Lower Manhattan with Tobias Frere-Jones

Day one of TypeLab! Met up with Tobias in the Financial District for a walking tour of Lower Manhattan. It was unfortunately 100 degrees in New York City on this day and we had to settle for a "lite" version of this tour. What we did see, however, was amazing; do take it if you ever get the chance.

"Lookie there!" The expression of the morning. Cecelie points something out to Tobias.

One of my favorite stops on the tour. Tobias pointed out that the "lazy" sign-maker responsible for this specimen began carving slab-serif letters and ended with more rounded ones.

"Preservation by neglect:" a common thread throughout the tour was the way that old New York signage is preserved due to people simply not caring enough to remove it. Business owners will often cover an old sign with a new one (typically vinyl nowadays), leaving the original fully intact beneath. This is one extraordinarily clear instance of this.
